Title:  “The Goddess Test”

Author: Aimee Carter  (If you ever get the chance- Google her. SHE’S GORGEOUS.)

What it’s about: (This comes from Good reads.)

Every girl who had taken the test has died.
Now it's Kate's turn.
It's always been just Kate and her mom - and her mother is dying. Her last wish? To move back to her childhood home. So Kate's going to start at a new school with no friends, no other family and the fear that her mother won't live past the fall.
Then she meets Henry. Dark. Tortured. And mesmerizing. He claims to be Hades, god of the Underworld - and if she accepts his bargain, he'll keep her mother alive while Kate tries to pass seven tests.
Kate is sure he's crazy - until she sees him bring a girl back from the dead. Now saving her mother seems crazily possible. If she succeeds, she'll become Henry's future bride and a goddess.
If she fails...

Overall Rating:  7/7- THIS BOOK WAS WRITTEN AND KISSED BY THE ANGELS AND HANDCRAFTER BY THE TEARS OF JESUS.

What we thought about it:
OH MY GOD THIS IS SUCH A GOOD BOOK.
Okay, so a friend recommended this book to me a couple months ago,  and I wasn’t sure if I wanted to read it- because I have never really read any Greek Mythology books and wasn’t sure if I would like it. (I LOVE GREEK MYTHOLOGY NOW.)
The characters are gods and what not, but they have American versions of them- like Henry is Hades, Hera is Calliope- you get the idea. I really liked it, because it made the entire thing more modern. The book doesn’t drag on and Carter gets right to the plot. Kate is the main character, and she’s perfect. (Probably one of my favs.) She is real and isn’t like a fake or anything, who has actual life problems. She’s gorgeous (Of course.) Henry, the guy who challenges her just makes me want to scream-

"OH MY GOD MARRY ME, HADES."

He is so perfect I can’t go into detail because then I’d just scream. The plot was amazing, and genius. Carter is a brilliant woman. The romance between Henry and Kate doesn’t really occur until the later half of the book- but that’s only because one of them is stubborn and it’s the typical way a writer will keep you reading.
There really wasn’t anything I didn’t like. I loved all the characters, and like I said earlier, the plot was amazing and made me keep reading- even though I had a lot of homework and work to do.

Other Quick Things:

There are three books. They have little side POV books that aren’t that great or important, but if you want to, you can read them- but I’m not listing them here.
  -The Goddess Test
  -Goddess Interrupted
  - The Goddess Inheritance

They all are amazing, and I read the entire series in like three days.

Xxx,

Caroline

"Life As We Knew It" Book Review

“Life As We Knew It”

By Susan Beth Pfeffer (Good luck saying that one.)

Title:  “Life As We Knew it”

Author: Susan Beth Pfeffer

What it’s about: (This comes from Good reads.)

Miranda’s disbelief turns to fear in a split second when a meteor knocks the moon closer to the earth. How should her family prepare for the future when worldwide tsunamis wipe out the coasts, earthquakes rock the continents, and volcanic ash blocks out the sun? As summer turns to Arctic winter, Miranda, her two brothers, and their mother retreat to the unexpected safe haven of their sunroom, where they subsist on stockpiled food and limited water in the warmth of a wood-burning stove.

Told in journal entries, this is the heart-pounding story of Miranda’s struggle to hold on to the most important resource of all--hope--in an increasingly desperate and unfamiliar world.

Overall Rating:  5/7- So Good!

What we thought about it:
If you are a person that enjoys science fiction, zombie or survival stories this one’s for you. It doesn’t have zombies or flesh eating diseases, but when a meteor strikes the moon and causes the weather to go crazy- it kind of creates an, “Oh shit, the world is ending,” mood and book. The book is told from a diary, but she explains things with dialogue that will make the reader forget she’s cornily writing in a diary while the world is literally collapsing outside her window.
The POV is first person, so you can get the sense of really feeling things coming from her- not through the writer that just explains it. (I love first person!!) They do some kind of crazy things, but nothing like eating other people or drinking their pee. Yes, I have read books like that- it wasn’t realistic. This book is. People do go crazy, but Miranda still keeps this good strong head through it.
There isn’t much to talk about here, other than I really liked the main character- she wasn’t the stereotypical survival gal, she had some fear in her that somehow made her a real girl in a not-so-real world. The weather was crazy but believable and Pfeffer’s writing really was creative. She had a couple plot twist that I didn’t see coming- but not so many that you saw it coming. It was evenly spaced, which is good.  However, there isn’t a ton of romance and her boyfriend kind of pissed me off. I don’t know what it was, but he was just UGH. But other than that- This was a good book for the people who need a good shake up every once in a while. I would for sure tell someone to read this if they asked.

Other Quick Things:

There are four total books. The others are called:  “The Dead and Gone”, “The World We Live In” and the newest one which came out a month ago (There wasn’t supposed to be a fourth book- but she changed her mind.) It’s called “The Shade of the Moon.”

Xxx,

Caroline

"Slated" Book Review

“Slated

Title:  “Slated”

Author: Terri Terry

What it’s about: (This comes from Good reads.)

  Kyla’s memory has been erased,
her personality wiped blank,
her memories lost for ever.

She’s been Slated.

The government claims she was a terrorist and that they are giving her a second chance - as long as she plays by their rules. But echoes of the past whisper in Kyla’s mind. Someone is lying to her, and nothing is as it seems. Who can she trust in her search for the truth?

Our Overall Rating:  3/7- It was okay I guess. I would recommend it if I had to?

What we thought about it:

I’m not quite sure what I thought about this book. The plot was GREAT and the idea was really good, but the romance (between Ben and Kyla) and the action (Mostly coming from Kyla) wasn’t that great. The relationship between Ben and Kyla was stereotypically- the whole, “I’ll always love you.” Cue the awkward hand holding- you get the idea. And the action/stereotypical dystopian teenage girl was obnoxious. Unless you are the classic girls like Katniss, Tris, Clary or a few others, then I won’t be over the moon about you.
I didn’t understand the whole sibling thing going on here, either. She and her sister Amy were odd- I don’t even know. Her “dad” was never even in the picture- I forgot she even had one at some point. Her Mom was annoying as all get out. She’s that stereotypical, “CLEAN THE DISHES OR ELSE I’LL MAKE YOU BREAK UP WITH YOUR PLAYGROUND BOYFRIEND THAT YOU ALWAYS RUN WITH AND YOU GUYS ARE SO CHEESY.”
Like shut up- no you won’t.
But something that drove me crazy was how EVERYBODY SMILES ALL THE TIME.
Terry does have a few good points- her writing skills were fairly well. Oh- and I liked that it was in set Europe! Most take place in the states, so this was good for a change.

I can’t say much more, because then I’d just spoil the whole thing.

Other Quick Things:   There are more books- I think they have three.

Peace out girl scout!

City of Bones Book Review

“City of Bones

Title:  City of Bones

Author: Cassandra Claire

What it’s about:
When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder—much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It’s hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing—not even a smear of blood—to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

This is Clary’s first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It’s also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace’s world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know. . . .

Our Overall Rating:  6- Incomprehensible!

What we thought about it:
We definitely had to write about this first since it’s coming out in theaters soon and our blog is named after it. Overall it was a really good book, but it wasn’t like the best thing ever. It’s an imaginative fantasy book written in third person. Even though we loved the characters more than the actual book, it’s definitely worth your time. It was very suspense filled and there were a TON of plot twists (especially one at the end that left us in shock!!!!!.....!!!!!.....!!!!). If you have read it you know what we are talking about!
            If you liked “
Harry Potter” then this somewhat sounds like the match for you. I can’t even count the creatures they have, but just to name a few:

-       Shadowhunters (Demon killers)
-       Vampires
-       Werewolves
-       Fairies
-       Warlocks (Superpower/Magical kind of person)

This book does have the occasional curse word, so there isn’t much to worry about. Romance plays a role- a big one, but you don’t realize that until later. There is kissing here and there- nothing you can’t handle. However, at the end, romance is a larger key and it probably will disgust you. We have one thing to tell you:

READ THE NEXT BOOK.
JUST DO IT.

Just trust us. J

Until next time!

Xoxoxo,

Katherine and Caroline
